Learn to Surf or Improve Your Skills
We can teach you to surf if you’re brand new to it, or if you’re already experienced, we can take you to many of the world class waves that Costa Rica has to offer. From playful beach breaks that are perfect for learning to more challenging and high-performance waves that will test your skills– we have the local knowledge to ensure that you’ll catch the waves you’ve been dreaming about.

With over a decade of guiding surf trips around the country and teaching people of all ages from all over the world to surf, we pride ourselves in providing enriching, safe and accessible surf sessions for all of our clients’ needs.
Our Professional Team and Leader
Lead manager, Gustavo Santana is a certified ISA (International Surfing Association) surf instructor and lifeguard. Involved in the Adaptive Surf Association, Snapper Surf School also offers inclusive, focused and accessible surf experiences and lessons for those with special needs. All of our instructors are dedicated to your safety in the ocean and making sure you have a good time with our spirit of Pura Vida.
The Perfect Location: Playa Avellanas
Our surf lessons are based in Playa Avellanas within the Santa Cruz area of the Guanacaste region. This stretch of beach boasts a variety of different waves types for all levels of surfers making it a perfect starting point. The beachbreak peaks can be punchy and fun for those looking for lips to hit and tubes to sneak into, while also offering softer inside rollers for beginners that are just learning.
Challenges for Experienced Surfers
For more experienced surfers, there are also river mouths, points, reefs and more challenging beach breaks nearby that provide solid waves, especially when the swell is up.
Flexible Access to the Waves
Most waves are accessible by car, but we can also charter boats to more remote and legendary surf spots in Guanacaste.

Surf Lessons
New to surfing? No problem! In all of our lessons, we focus on the fundamentals of surfing and ocean safety and awareness. We offer individual or group lessons for all ages and abilities and provide the equipment to get you up and riding! With ISA certified instructors, we have specialized and accessible training affiliated with the Adaptive Surf Association. Based in Playa Avellanas, this beach offers waves that are perfect for learning, stunning tropical surroundings and cool restaurants that are great for chilling out and catching the sunset.
Road Trip Surf Adventure
Looking to get off the beaten path? Let us take the wheel! For surfers with some experience that are looking to explore Costa Rica’s other surf breaks, we can show you what else Guanacaste has to offer with day trips by car. With our local knowledge and guidance, we can put you in waves that match your skill and adventure level.
Boat Trip Surf Adventure
Some of Costa Rica’s best surf breaks are accessible only by boat. Located in the expansive wilderness of Santa Rosa National Park, the legendary surf spots of Witch's Rock and Ollie’s Point are national treasures you can’t miss if you’re in the area.
Stand Up Paddle Experience
Stand-up paddling is an excellent option for people looking to have a lower-impact experience in the water. For groups of 5 or more, we provide all the equipment, transportation and instruction for you to enjoy the aquatic scenery of our gorgeous coastline.
Surf Photography and Video
When it comes to capturing your surfing experience in Costa Rica to share with family and friends, or to gain insight for improving your surfing technique and maneuvers, photo and video sessions with us provide you with the best angles of your sessions. Our specialty is in nailing the best shooting positions to send you home with rad shots and clips of your surfing adventures.
